Huge thanks to these two articles here and here for a lot of the information in this guide! The list below is organized by sound to help when describing what your character is doing.
Nicker
- - - A vibrating sound made with a closed mouth using vocal cords. Varies from soft to loud.
When to use a nicker:
- Greeting another character that you've met before, a quick, passing greeting.
- Trying to get another character's attention without using words.
- A mother cooing to her foal.
Whinny
- - - Starts as a squeal, ends in a nicker. Loudest and longest horse sound. Not used to display fear.
When to use a whinny:
- Calling out to other horses, trying to find other horses, asking in the general vicinity if anyone is there.
- If two characters are being separated and one doesn't want to leave the other, they may whinny to who they are being separated from.
- Can be used to display nervousness or excitement depending on the situation.
Blow
- - - Blowing air out of the nostrils, does not have the same vibration as a snort. May put muzzle close to the other horse or object they are blowing at.
When to use a blow:
- Meeting another character for the first time, trying to figure out if that horse is not dangerous.
- Trying to figure out if an object or animal is dangerous.
- Displaying feelings of intense curiosity.
Snort
- - - A vibrating sound through the nostrils. Lasts about 1 second.
When to use a snort:
- To display uncertainty, snorting at an object or another horse debating whether or not it is dangerous.
- Calming down after a time of stress or intense activity.
- Shrugging something off, coupled with exiting the situation.
Squeal
- - - Similar to a scream but with a closed mouth. Can be short and loud or long and quiet.
When to use a squeal:
- Displaying opposition to something/someone.
- Showing fear, calling out for help.
- Can be used during play as just a fun romping play noise.
Scream
- - - A loud roar of rage.
When to use a scream:
- Telling another character to back off, threatening another character with battle if they don't leave.
- At the beginning of battle before an attack as a battlecry.
- During battle to intimidate as well as distract.
Grunt
- - - A low, short, guttural sound typically made with a closed mouth.
When to use a grunt:
- When you character is doing a strenuous activity like jumping, running, etc.
- When your character is physically fatigued.
- When your character has had some sort of pain inflicted upon them but they may be trying to conceal it.
